Successfull Gaidhlig Workshop Hobart Tasmania 12th January 2009 - Report

David Robertson reported back to us on the very successfull Gaidhlig Workshop Hobart Tasmania 12th January 2009 with a presentation by journalist Ruairidh MacIlleathain.

Click here to read more about this workshop

The room was full, and Ruairidh MacIlleathain was under a little pressure to put on a good performance for at least one good reason (one workshop attendee had actually flown into Hobart from Canberra just to attend the 90 minute presentation on Gaidhlig). It was a great turn out, with people mostly from Hobart, but some travelling down from the north of the state and others from Bruny Island.

Many of you will know, or have seen or heard of Ruairidh (Gaidhlig speaking journalist from Inverness, but who spent 19 years in Tasmania with his family) perhaps on the BBC website or come across him as he performs one of his many roles in promoting the language. He was on his Christmas holidays here to visit family, but he offered to come in one night and run the workshop at the Glenorchy library (Hobart’s suburb of Glenorchy is, I think it is safe to say, nothing like its Scottish namesake).

It was a great presentation, using power point slides to take us through the history of the language, and provide a brief introduction to its structure and vocabulary, as well as a look at the current state of the language.

There were 24 people crammed into the room, with a couple of late comers locked outside (until everyone worked out what the flashing red light meant in the corner).

This interest was not difficult to generate. Emails were sent out to folk music groups, the University, Scottish Cultural and dance groups, and Communn Gaidhlig Astrailia. These organizations in turn sent out to their members, and members to their friends….and on it rolled.

Part of the aim of the workshop was to try to identify someone who was a fluent speaker who was also willing to take lessons, as presently Tasmania has no classes running. Not yet succeeded with that one, although there are a handful of fluent speakers in the state (perhaps a bit less than a full handful). Maybe we should encourage Gaelic speaking Scottish backpackers here to run classes if they plan to stop for a few months? I now plan to use some resources available to me in the short term to learn the language, and then look at joining an on-line course, and I will keep in touch on an irregular basis with people who attended the night with any news.

I wonder what the chances are of the UK or Scottish Governments funding/supporting some Gaelic speakers to teach during their travels, or getting some mainland Australian fluent speakers to run short courses in Tasmania now and again if there is enough demand (they could combine it with a holiday!!)?

At any rate, the workshop was a huge success. Even if people attending didn’t want to go on to learn the language, there was appreciation of the importance of the language and the imperative of keeping it alive as the heart of the culture.

If you are interested in Gaelic in Tasmania, contact David Robertson by email robe083@bigpond.com or phone 03 62312130.

NSW - Sydney

14 March 2009 - Visit from Janet MacDonald, CGA member on the Isle of Mull.

We are being honoured by a visit from Janet MacDonald, a long standing CGA member on the Isle of Mull. Janet is the current Convenor of the Royal National Mod, and is Gaelic Tutor to the Mull Choir. In this capacity she will be also visiting Coisir Ghàidhlig Astràilianach whilst in Sydney

For interest to Gaelic learners, she is a Tutor with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig's An Cùrsa Inntrigidh, and has tutored CGA member Cliff Cumming of Deakin University.

Janet will be attending our March Cearcall (this Saturday 14th) at Scottish House, Guildford (Corner Calliope and Military Roads Guildford - opposite the train station.) To allow time for discussion and to fit in with Janet's timetable, we will begin at 12 midday, rather than the normal 2pm.

Tasmania - Hobart

7 pm 12 January 2009

A 3 hour workshop session by esteemed Gaelic journalist Ruairidh MacIllithean will take place on 12th January 2009, starting at 7pm at the Glenorchy Library, Derwent Room, Hobart.

The session will inform people about the Gaelic language in Scotland, particularly recent developments. It will be an awareness raiser and will ask the question as to whether there might be an opportunity for Gaelic classes in Hobart. See attached flyer for details (link?)

Please confirm to David Robertson by email robe083@bigpond.com or phone 03 62312130 by the 5th January 2009 if you are coming.
